The idea was to provide a space and opportunity for Kommetjie and our neighbour Ocean View to participate in a joint venture to the benefit of all. Proceeds went to the Ocean View Neighbourhood Development Forum, for their Information Centre.

We had 96 stalls, with a great variety of goods. There were enough things to tittilate the tastebuds; food, cakes, sweets, boerewors rolls, samoosas, "koesisters" and various other nibbly things as well as cooldrinks, and of course the pubs did a roaring trade during the rugby matches. It was like a mass exodus, all the "manne" went to cheer for their team. Don't ask me who was playing, I haven't got a clue, and even if I knew it wouldn't make me any the wiser.

To get back to the stalls. There were clothes stalls, new and second hand, for ladies, gents, kids, toddlers and babies. Some really funky stuff that I haven't seen before. There was a jumping castle for the kids, games, CDs, DVDs, art, craft of various kinds, compost worms, teddybears, leather purses, you name it.

We even had an NSRI display with two boats. Cape Medical response also attended.

We had some great compliments after the fact and most stall holders indicated they would be interested to do this again.

The reason we called it Kom-Unity Market is that phonetically this sounds like 'community' which is what we are trying to create. It is also a play on words, 'Kom' the first three letters of Kommetjie (which in Afrikaans means basin, bowl, cup, as in container) then 'unity' because we did it with, and for, Ocean View, our closest neighbour suburb.
Our next market will be during the festive season.
Click here to view my web album with photos of the Kommetjie Community Market.

Some farmyard animals

guys helping to keep the place clean.
